How to use acabar in Brazilian Portuguese

Acabar is the Brazilian Portuguese verb for to end, to end up, to run out (acabar de = to have just). It is a regular -ar verb, so once you know the endings there are no surprises.

Three tenses do almost all the work in conversation. The presente covers the present and the near future: eu acabo — I end up. The pretérito perfeito is the finished past, the English simple past: eu acabei — I ended up / I just…. The pretérito imperfeito is for habits, background and how things used to be: eu acabava — I used to end up.

Said the Rio way, acabo sounds like ah-KAH-boo. The nós form acabamos ends in the carioca “sh”, ah-kah-BAH-moosh — the most recognisable sound of the Rio accent, where São Paulo says a plain s.
