vir — to come
Full conjugation of vir in the tenses that matter for everyday speech, with pronunciation hints in the Rio (carioca) accent and example sentences the way Brazilians actually talk — not textbook European Portuguese.
How to use vir in Brazilian Portuguese
Vir is the Brazilian Portuguese verb for to come. It is an irregular verb: 10 of its forms in the three tenses below break the regular -ir pattern (venho, vem, vêm, vim, veio, viemos…), and those are the ones to learn by heart.
Three tenses do almost all the work in conversation. The presente covers the present and the near future: eu venho — I come. The pretérito perfeito is the finished past, the English simple past: eu vim — I came. The pretérito imperfeito is for habits, background and how things used to be: eu vinha — I used to come / was coming. Because vir is one of the 58 most-used verbs, the page also has both subjunctives: the presente do subjuntivo, the mood of wishes, doubts and “quero que…” — eu venha — that I come — and the imperfeito do subjuntivo, the tense of hypotheticals: eu viesse — if I came.
Said the Rio way, venho sounds like VEH-nyoo. The nós form vimos ends in the carioca “sh”, VEE-moosh — the most recognisable sound of the Rio accent, where São Paulo says a plain s.
