How to use avisar in Brazilian Portuguese

Avisar is the Brazilian Portuguese verb for to let (someone) know, to warn. It is a regular -ar verb, so once you know the endings there are no surprises.

Three tenses do almost all the work in conversation. The presente covers the present and the near future: eu aviso — I let (you) know. The pretérito perfeito is the finished past, the English simple past: eu avisei — I let (you) know / warned. The pretérito imperfeito is for habits, background and how things used to be: eu avisava — I used to let (you) know / warn.

Said the Rio way, aviso sounds like ah-VEE-zoo. The nós form avisamos ends in the carioca “sh”, ah-vee-ZAH-moosh — the most recognisable sound of the Rio accent, where São Paulo says a plain s.
